We define visible light that’s naturally produced by the sun coming in your home through your window/glass door or the strong ambient light produced by your fixtures. Because most buildings in the city are clustered, we do not use the term “South-facing windows”, most likely your windows are blocked by buildings or not facing in the ideal direction, unless you reside in high-rise building. If you experience all four seasons during the year, or in a space with low light, you will need to consider moving plants from one space to the other or obtaining additional light to provide the necessary light frequency to help your plants produce healthy new growth.

Most living things need a minimum of light exposure, including plants. Not all east cost indoor tropical plants, also known as indoor plants, need harsh direct sunlight, specially if they are in a static environment. Over exposure of direct sunlight can lead to sun burn. Some plants require a greater amount of light and brightness throughout the day. For this reason it is import to understand what type of light your plants require. Caring of tropical plants, can be tricky in part because the light and temperature is not consistent year-round in the east coast.

Defining type of light:

What is LOW light? No direct sunlight will reach your plant. It is probably a few feet away from your light source (sunny window) or any space where it can see outside but cannot see the sky. Low light means less energy and less food. Some plants can survive in low light conditions but they will not thrive.

Will you over or under water your plants? Before you start caring for any of your new plants, consider if any of the plants do better in a pot with or no drainage. What is the frequency of watering for your new plant? Does high maintenance plant matches your life style? Matching your plant with your lifestyle and space will be important.

Before bringing a plant home, be aware how playful is your pet with things that are new or unknown. Not all plants are pet safe. Some plants can cause your pet a deadly reaction. For this reason, it is extremely important to understand what type of plant is safe to bring home or where to place a toxic plant.

An educational tool designed by Micro Plant Studio to help current and future plant parents that are moving in or reside in urban spaces, more specifically in the East Coast of the USA. Caring for plants in the east coast can be challenging because the range and frequency of light plant receives each season varies.

This tool will help you categorise plants by the amount of water and light it needs and those that are pet friendly. It is important to note, these are a few of plants that we cary in our studio. They are many other plants in nature that we do not carry either because they are too challenging to care for in the east coast or challenging to obtain. Year-round, we will be adding updating this tool by adding other plants.

Understanding the ideal temperature for each plant, the amount of water it needs during warm and cool temperature, and exposure of light it needs will help plant produce health new growth and most importantly help you become a happy and successful plant mom or dad.
